I work in oil and mixed media to produce paintings which are my visual response to the landscape, towns, buildings and aspects of nature.
I am mainly concerned with the energy, mood and feel of a place or thing and try to visually express this in my work.
I will tackle the basic shapes and forms, and get a feel for the colours and textures that make an impression on me. I will attempt to get across a definite sense of the place or thing specifically, but bring in something individual to describe it further. My paintings therefore draw on my feelings about both the physicality and the personality of something. Every place or aspect of the landscape or nature is charged with it's own individuality.
I may make many working drawings before I set about painting or only a rough sketch. Each subject requires something different and the level of preparation may depend on my own level of connection in the moment.
I am fascinated by the 'charge' of things and the energy that seems to radiate and oscillate from something. I am drawn to think about what it is that 'drives' everything and what may be accessible on other levels of existence.
I work in mixed media and oil and often over quite textured surfaces. There is an aspect of experimentation to the work as I enjoy allowing the materials to react and respond to one another giving extra levels of interest and fuelling my imagination as I build the painting.
Colours, shapes, varied line and markings all have their own part to play in describing the nature of my subject whether I am aware of rhythms, gestures, area shapes, mass, strength, voices, noises, simplicity or complexity.
There is a sense of seeing and feeling something spirited within the physicaility of the subject.
Working from plant forms in nature, the landscape, townscapes, still life and the human form, my paintings aim to be suggestive of both physicality and spirit.
